Google stole a bit of the thunder from Finovate Spring 2013 when it announced yesterday — at its I/O event very close by in San Francisco — that it was enabling Gmail users to send money using just their email accounts. In the late 1990s a friend asked me, “Why can’t I just email you the money?” Well, it only took fifteen years for the future to arrive. But wait, haven’t Gen Y’s stopped answering their email? Maybe they will now.
There is integration with Google Wallet involved, so it remains to be seen if this will leave iPhone users high and dry and demand a response from Apple.
The Google Gmail p2p feature is amazingly simple. I already had a Google Wallet account setup with a debit card so when I heard about this new feature of Gmail I logged into my wallet account and added my bank account information. That authentication process was also very simple for me.
If you live in the US and would like early access to this new Gmail feature currently available on the web version of Gmail, add your email address to the comments here or send me your email address via a Twitter DM and I will send you a penny later tonight. Once you accept the penny I send you into your Goggle Wallet, the p2p feature will be added to your Gmail account in about 30 – 60 minutes (approximate time has been variable since the announcement).
