Payments processors Mastercard and Visa will both enable payments on Fitbit Ionic, the first full smartwatch to be released by the company this year in October, according to separate announcements by the respective companies.
Fitbit Ionic users will be able to load eligible cards (either Visa or Mastercard supported cards, depending on customer preference) onto the “fitness smartwatch” in the same manner as a normal digital wallet.
The users will then be able to use the watch to support digital and contactless payments. With Mastercard reporting customers can use the capability at more than 6 million contactless terminals at merchants across the globe.
