Python has previously tended to expose itself to security vulnerabilities. How can I avoid that?

Python has had less time to vet out security vulnerabilities because it’s younger than say Java. In Python, an issue is that any interactions with the file system (os.system) can be turned into executable code. Are there ways to systematically avoiding these vulnerabilities?
