Monitoring Transactions Without a Forklift

With so many business expectations evolving around the consumer experience as a focal point, why has transaction-centric application performance monitoring NOT been adopted by ALL banks? Newer network-based solutions can be deployed in less than a day that can correlate multi-hop transactions in near real-time – without requiring agents, code changes or extra traffic loads....

VIDEO: Bank of America Shows the Lighter Side of RDC for College Kids

Bank of America has some fun with a video showing a college student using remote deposit capture (RDC) on his iPhone to deposit his check from grandma. (He tosses the card it came in, of course.) Nearly identical ads are on the bank’s YouTube channel showing the same operation on an iPad and Android devices, as well as a video showcasing, in surprising detail, how to use person-to-person payments to transfer money, in this case, to the babysitter.

The video launched last week and looks to be another product of the bank’s work with the Hill Holliday Agency, an advertising firm. Bank of America is the largest retail bank in the nation, with close to $500 billion in deposits.

Justin Bieber: Heartthrob, Singer … Banker

Justin Bieber is lending his face and voice — well, speaking voice, anyway — to a prepaid card from SpendSmart Payments Company, formerly known as BillMyParents Inc. In the video below, the first of a series, Bieber discusses his modest upbringing and the need for teens to learn smart spending habits. Don’t scoff — it’s Financial Literacy Month.

Bieber is lending his considerable social media muscle to help market the card. He has more than 50 million Facebook fans and 37 million Twitter followers.

The New York Times reports seven million prepaid cards in circulation in 2012, and the average age of a SpendSmart cardholder as 16. Bieber’s card has already garnered criticism for high fees– $3.95 a month plus $0.75 to load it from a checking account, as well as fees for inactivity and balance inquiries — but he has had better luck than the Kardashians in the card space.

Michelle Jun, a lawyer with Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports, advises against prepaid cards for teens, saying parents should opt for a traditional checking account at a bank or credit union. She’s obviously not a Belieber.

Sesame Street’s Word of the Day: Innovation!

By
March 25, 2013

We’re always discussing innovations here at Bank Innovation, so it was no surprise to turn on the TV early this morning to see the topic had even spread to the gang on “Sesame Street!”

What does it mean that this word is now being taught to toddlers? While we ponder that, we’ll put in a cautionary note against unchecked innovation. The use of CGI to render the “Sesame Street” puppets is surely a step too far! But maybe we should let the younger generation decide that one on their own.

Shake that thang. Swedbank, one of the largest banks in Sweden, is finding its mobile banking customers like to shake their smartphones. During Super Bowl XLVII, E*Trade Was the Only Financial Services Advertiser

By

For financial services marketers, it is anything but a “Super” Bowl this year. According to published reports, E*Trade Financial was the only financial services company spending the $3.8 million for a 30-second spot during this year’s Super Bowl, which featured a skin-of-their-teeth victory for the Baltimore Ravens. That is not to say financial services companies are averse to football, mind you. Six of the 34 college football bowl games during the 2012-2013 season were sponsored by FIs, including Capital One Financial Corp. and Discover Financial Services.
