The Instagram analytics service Nitrogram put together a list of the 50 most popular brands on Instagram — and there isn’t a financial institution to be found in the list.
Same with the Top 100. And the Top 200.
The top-ranking financial services company is American Express, which checked in at No. 258. (No. 255, the Barclays Center, named for a financial services company, doesn’t count.)
But Instagram is quirky and, in the corporate world, still fairly new. To wit, some big brands scored below their weight class in terms of marketing dollars. McDonald’s came in at No. 71 — four spots behind Toms shoes — and Coca-Cola at No. 89 – just behind “Game of Thrones” at No. 88.
Nike took the top spot, followed by Starbucks and Forever 21. Food and apparel brands are heavily represented in the Top 50. The top media property was MTV at No. 13 followed by Playboy at No. 25. Oreo, at No. 50, rounded out the top tier of brands on Instagram.
The rankings are basedon two factors: number of followers, and the number of posts by other Instagrammers using the brand’s hashtag.
Nike was far out ahead of the competition with 1,684,549 followers and 13,330,814 posts on its hashtag. American Express, by comparison, counted 27,968 followers, with 7,951 posts on its hashtag.
American Express is working social media harder than most of its rivals in financial services, even selling items inline on Twitter.
From these rankings, it appears that most other financial institutions are not yet heavily invested in Instagram as a plaform for their brands.
Instagram is an image and video-sharing platform owned by Facebook, Inc. It counts 130 million active monthly users.
