Good news for U.K. challenger bank Monzo today as 94% of active users have upgraded to the new full current account.
But while 362,000 users have chosen to upgrade their accounts, about 98,000 have not, meaning they will not be able to use their existing Monzo prepaid cards.
Monzo launched its prepaid card business in 2015. But in 2017, upon receiving a full banking license from the U.K. regulators, it decided to close the prepaid business and shift to full current accounts.
In a statement released on its blog, Monzo said:
We’re so excited for what’s next, and we couldn’t have got here without you. Thank you ❤ If you’re one of the 98,000 people who haven’t upgraded, as we explained back in January and in our emails since then, your prepaid card has stopped working and your app can no longer send or receive payments.
For the users that chose not to return to Monzo, the neobank said:
We’ll return any money left in your account back to your original bank cards or transfer it to one of your bank accounts over the next few weeks. If neither of those are possible, we’ll get in touch to find out the best way to make sure we return your money safely.
