Businesses and developers will soon be able to accept payments directly through voice apps on Amazon’s Alexa device, the company announced yesterday during its re:Invent event in Las Vegas.
This essentially works the same way as a mobile in-app purchase would: after reaching a limit of free content on participating voice skills, users can now pay “in-skill” in the same way they would through a mobile application.
The new payment feature follows a new subscription feature also available on the Alexa device for certain apps, and comes after Amazon sold high numbers of its voice devices during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The feature will start with games, donations, restaurants, and event ticketing. It is slated to expand to other areas and skills some time in the next year, according to Amazon.
