Global payment network Mastercard will be opening another innovation lab, this time in Pune, India, where the company will continue to focus on finding and experimenting with new fintech technologies.
This is the ninth innovation lab that Mastercard has launched (others are in cities such as New York and Dublin), and will experiment with key areas in fintech such as alternative or digital payments and financial security.
The company is also partnering with the Andhra Pradesh government in the country for that government’s “smart city” plan, which would create a more digital, cashless society.
This news also follows Mastercard’s agreement with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), where it is working to develop “Bharat QR,” a method of digital payment using QR codes.
