Payments provider Mastercard will launch a Masterpass QR ‘bot on Facebook Messenger, to allow small businesses to accept QR-based payments, the company announced today.
The company will pilot the ‘bot in Nigeria, partnering with Ecobank an Zenith Bank in the country, it announced. The bot, which will join an expanding ecosystem of chatbots and automated services on Facebook’s Messenger, will enable businesses to encourage “financial inclusion within the country,” Peter Amangbo, CEO of Zenith Bank, said in today’s release.
A business can get started with the service by sending a request to the bot; this will allow that business to receive approval from banks, set up their account, and begin accepting digital payments via QR—a code the owners can print and hang and save onto their own smartphones.
Consumers, then, will pay by scanning that merchant’s QR code with their phones.
