LevelUp’s new(ish) barcode scanners rolled out in the Gregory’s Coffee chain today.
We got this tidbit from the barrista who rang up the purchases of a couple of Bank Innovation staffers. (Disclosure: We drink a lot of coffee.)
Just four days ago Gregory’s, a new, upscale coffee franchise with 10 locations in New York, launched its LevelUp mobile app. Gregory’s first disclosed last month that it would begin using LevelUp. The barrista told us that Gregory’s waited to install LevelUp in all of its locations at once, even though particular stores had the LevelUp readers weeks before.
And consumers are using the LevelUp reader even on its first day on Gregory’s counters. A customer entering the store pointed at the LevelUp device and asked, “Does it work?” (There are a number of derelict LevelUp devices on countertops in the area.) When the answer was affirmative, she pulled out her phone and the device read her barcode, glowing a cheerful green as the payment was accepted.
Below is a look of the LevelUp reader in action. Note the Square Reader dongle to the left in the photo. If that doesn’t tell you something, you’re not a banking innovation junkie.
